Characteristics of CNC machining of aluminum alloy

1. Low hardness of aluminum alloy

Compared with other metal materials, aluminum alloy has lower hardness and good cutting performance. However, due to its low melting point and high ductility, it is prone to adhesion on the precision machined surface or tool, and is prone to defects such as burrs. Of course, heat treated or die cast aluminum alloys also have higher hardness. The HRC hardness of general aluminum plates is generally below HRC40 degrees. Therefore, in the case of processing aluminum alloy, the load of the tool is small. In addition, aluminum alloy has excellent thermal conductivity, so the cutting temperature of aluminum alloy milling is low, which can improve milling speed.

2. Low plasticity of aluminum alloys

Aluminum alloy has low plasticity and low melting point. When machining aluminum alloy with CNC, there are deep edge issues, poor chip removal performance, and high surface roughness. In fact, CNC machining of aluminum alloy mainly results in poor knife and roughness effects. If the two issues of fixed blade and machined surface quality are solved, the problem of aluminum alloy machining can be solved.

3. Tools are prone to wear and tear

Due to the use of unsuitable tool materials, there are more cases of accelerated tool wear during the processing of aluminum alloy due to issues such as rod edges and chip discharge. If a tool with a negative rake angle shape is used, it is prone to deposition on the cutting edge. While increasing the difficulty of machining, it can also cause surface roughness and machining accuracy to deteriorate due to chip buildup. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a tool that can suppress the cutting temperature to the minimum, has good roughness of the front tool surface, and can smoothly discharge chips. A tool with a sharp front cutting edge and sufficient chip removal space is most suitable.
