Why Surface Finish Matters
Medical components, particularly surgical tools like forceps, clamps, and implants, are subject to stringent surface roughness requirements. A rough or scratched surface can harbor bacteria or microscopic debris, compromising the sterility of the instrument.
For example, the contact area of a stainless steel surgical forceps must often be finished to Ra ≤ 0.4 μm. At this level, the surface is smooth enough to resist microbial buildup and easy enough to sterilize effectively after use.
The Real Risk: Residue and Infection
Beyond roughness, post-machining cleanliness is just as crucial. After finishing and polishing, any residual particles, cutting fluids, or burrs can interfere with the device's function-or worse, pose a clinical infection risk during surgical use.
In one project, we machined a batch of stainless steel surgical clamps that required not only a mirror-like finish but also zero particulate residue after ultrasonic cleaning. Even after reaching the required Ra value, we found micro-burrs and machining residue in the tight inner curves.
