Common Causes of Rejection for Machined Parts in the US and Europe

In precision machining services for international clients, the inspection stage plays a vital role in ensuring quality and building long-term partnerships. Compared with domestic customers, clients in the US and Europe often follow more rigorous and standardized quality inspection procedures. Understanding and avoiding common reasons for rejection can significantly improve the first-pass yield and customer satisfaction. Based on our experience serving overseas markets, here are some of the most frequent rejection points and the reasons behind them.

1. Dimensional Out-of-Tolerance

This is one of the most common and critical reasons for rejection. US and European customers strictly adhere to the tolerance specifications on engineering drawings. Even minor deviations-especially on critical dimensions-can lead to a full batch being rejected.

Root causes may include:

Improper machining programs;

Unstable fixture or clamping;

Inconsistent measurement methods or uncalibrated tools;

Lack of awareness of key dimensions among operators.

2. Surface Finish Issues

Customers from the US and Europe have high expectations for surface quality. Common problems include rough surfaces, insufficient or uneven anodizing or plating, discoloration, water or oil marks, and scratches.

Especially important for:

Industries like medical and aerospace, where surface uniformity is closely tied to both performance and appearance;

Surface finishes that require specific standards such as salt spray resistance, hardness, or coating thickness.

3. Incorrect Material or Missing Certificates

It's not enough for parts to be well-machined-they must also be made from the correct material. If the material doesn't match the drawing or order, the parts may be rejected regardless of dimensional accuracy. Customers often require material certificates (e.g., Material Cert, RoHS, REACH).

Common issues:

Material batch confusion due to poor inventory control;

Special material requirements not clearly communicated or confirmed;

Missing traceability markings or documentation.

4. Poor Control of Geometric Tolerances

Some parts, especially those for assembly, require strict control over geometric tolerances such as concentricity, flatness, and parallelism. Parts may pass basic size checks but still fail in assembly due to tolerance stack-up or misalignment.

Recommended approach:

Thoroughly review all GD&T requirements in the drawings;

Use CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) or dedicated gauges for verification;

Clarify with customers which features are function-critical.

5. Damage During Packaging and Shipping

Packaging is often an overlooked but crucial factor. Inadequate protection can lead to dents, scratches, or deformation during transport. Many clients also have specific packaging standards regarding cleanliness, labeling, and anti-corrosion measures.

Solutions:

Use foam inserts, plastic sleeves, bubble wrap, or custom trays to protect critical surfaces;

Separate stainless steel and aluminum parts to avoid scratches;

Strictly follow any packaging guidelines provided by the customer.
