CNC Machining in Casting-Based Subtractive Manufacturing: Precision and Efficiency Integration

Subtractive forming technology includes a variety of methods, and our classification is mainly based on the initial blank form of the part. Although the final subtractive process relies on machining technology, the source of the blank of the part is very different. Therefore, subtractive forming is mainly divided into three categories: profile subtractive forming, casting subtractive forming, and forging subtractive forming. This article mainly talks about casting subtractive processing.

       From the above figure, we can see that the blank of the part is obtained by casting. However, in order for these cast parts to meet the actual application and design requirements of the product, further subtractive processing is usually required, and the processing method is roughly the same as the profile processing mentioned above. However, cast parts have the following unique characteristics, which are different from profile processing:
      (1) They can be made into various special-shaped parts and greatly reduce the material reduction processing allowance;
      (2) The processing cost of parts can be minimized because the processing allowance of parts can be controlled;
      (3) The material selection of parts can be more flexible and have better product adaptability;
      (4) There are certain risks in material uniformity, and it is also very difficult to remove casting stress. Many companies even cut corners in these links.
      (5) The cost of part blanks is too high, especially for parts that cannot be mass-produced.

      Observing the above figure, we can clearly see that the initial shape of the part is formed by the casting process. However, to ensure that these cast parts can meet the actual application standards and design requirements of the product, subsequent subtractive processing steps are often required. These processing steps are essentially similar to the profile processing described above.
